The proposal was titled, A Systematic Investigation of the Development and Health Benefits of Functional Foods Derived from Mid-South Crops. Bergman received $111,000 to research the Effects of cultural management, maturity, genetics and environment on U.S. rice antioxidant levels. The other team members are scientists from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR; Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA; Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, LA; and ARS, Lane, OK. (2000)

Received $227,000 from the USA Rice Foundation for the proposal titled, Identification of critical gene variation impacting rice end-use quality (industrial and health-beneficial properties). Bergman s portion of the grant was $105,000. The co-investigator on this project is with the USDA-ARS Rice Research Unit. (2002)
