Research Development Award

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Research Development Award (RDA)
Deadline: March 28, 2008

Announcement: This announcement invites full-time academic facultymembers to submit funding proposals for the purpose of initiating new University research projects and creative pursuits. Depending on the number of applications received, approximately 10 awards will be offered. Awards are non-renewable and project duration is limited to one year. Only one RDA will be awarded per project. Funding requests are not to exceed $10,000.

Intent: The intent of this award is to provide support for a variety of scholarly and creative activities with more limited funding needs. Requests can be submitted for a variety of activities, including research proposal development, publication preparation, research related travel, equipment purchases, artistic productions or exhibits, and the collection of data. Additionally, the funding may be used for research that will result in the development of peer-reviewed publications or for the enhancement of collaboration with private industry, government, or community partners.

Investigators who have already received other internal or extramural funding in support of their specific research proposal or creative activity are not eligible to receive Research Development Awards.

Exclusions: Since other sources are available, RDA funds are not to be used for faculty stipends or summer salaries. Other exclusions include honorariums for guest speakers and hosting.

Student Support: Any request for student assistance must be fully detailed and justified in terms of tasks that directly benefit the PI's research efforts.

Application Package and Completion Instructions:

Download the RDA application package (Word doc)

  1. Complete the RDA Application. The RDA application should include a proposal description, budget form, budget justification narrative, and curriculum vitae. Please use MS Word with a 12-point, Times New Roman font. All pages should be single-spaced and have one inch margins. Packages may also be requested via email at robin.toles@unlv.edu.

  2. Attach letters of support. Note: The PI will be notified when the completed package has been received.

The Evaluation Process

Selection Process: Proposals will be evaluated by an RDA Advisory Committee composed of faculty representing a variety of disciplines. Their confidential comments and recommendations will be made to the AVP for Research Services who will then submit recommendations to the VP for Research and Dean of the Graduate College for final RDA selections.

Evaluation Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated based upon the criteria listed below:

  • The clarity of the project's purpose
  • The supporting logic/evidence that underlies and justifies the purpose
  • A clear and well developed methodology and plan of action
  • A cost-effective and well justified budget that clearly and directly supports the project
  • Description of the deliverables (i.e., paper, presentation, pilot project, publication, event, partnership, etc.)
  • Supportive letters from appropriate administrators at UNLV who can speak to the

anticipated success of the project, the probability of project completion, and the probability of production of appropriate deliverables

Ongoing Assessment of Progress: The principal investigator of successful RDAs are required to submit a mid-year report on the project progress. A final report is also required describing the success in or progress toward producing deliverables.
