Call for Nominations
Harry Reid Silver State Research Award
Deadline: Sept. 12, 2008

The Office of the President seeks nominations for the prestigious Harry Reid Silver State Research Award. Created in 2001, the award seeks to honor Senator Reid and to recognize faculty who have performed research that is both highly regarded and responsive to the needs of the community and state. The award carries a $10,000 stipend.

The award is open to full-time faculty members who are engaged in significant research that meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Directly and positively affects the economic growth and development of Nevada;
  • Addresses a pressing social need in the community and/or region;
  • Demonstrably advances significant scholarship in an academic field of knowledge.

This award is funded by a grant from the UNLV Foundation and is awarded by the President following recommendations by a review committee composed of faculty and community representatives.  

NOMINATIONS

A one-page formal letter of nomination must be submitted on behalf of the nominee. Nominations must be submitted to Robin Toles, Director of Research Services, mail stop 1087, no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12, 2008.

Those nominating a faculty member should notify the nominee, who must then submit an application for the award.

 APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Preparation of Application Packet: This packet must be completed by the nominee. The application packet should include five copies of each of the following items:

  • Application Process Instructions (Word)
  • Letter of Application (not to exceed five pages) outlining research activities and how they meet at least one and, ideally, several of the three criteria mentioned above
  • Current curriculum vitae of nominee that clearly classifies contributions according to the level of peer review
  • Supporting documentation, including but not limited to: books (one copy per book only); publications (no more than five); products, productions, and/or listings of exhibits. No other supporting materials will be considered.
  • A short biography of the nominee (no longer than 400 words)

Deadline:  Application packets should be hand-delivered (ATTN: Robin Toles) to FDH 514 no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12, 2008.

2. Request for Letters of Support: Applicants should request the following letters of support and have them sent directly to Robin Toles. All letters are due no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12, 2008.

  • Letter of recommendation from a peer
  • Letter of recommendation from nominee’s Dean, Department Chair, or supervisor
  • Letter from an external community representative
