The Office for the Protection of Human Subjects

Students as Investigators

It is the University policy that only those with whom the University has an on-going contractual relationship may serve as Principal Investigator. To address liability concerns, the Principal Investigator must be a faculty member.

Students may not serve as Principal Investigators. They must have a faculty advisor who fulfills the principal investigator eligibility criteria and who will serve as Principal Investigator and faculty advisor on the study.

Student-initiated research involving human subjects (including research for dissertations, theses/professional papers, or other projects) should be supervised by a faculty advisor, and appropriate forms describing the research should be submitted to the UNLV IRB for review. The faculty advisor takes the responsibility for ensuring that all research procedures comply with federal, State and University policies pertaining to the protection of human subjects.

All correspondence will be sent via email to the Faculty Advisor/PI and is copied to the student. Please ensure that all email addresses are correct for delivery of correspondence from OPRS.
