The Office for the Protection of Human Subjects

General Information

  • All human subject research conducted by UNLV faculty, students, and staff must be approved by the UNLV Institutional Review Board before beginning the research project.
  • All Researchers (faculty, students & staff) must present proof of completion of research ethics training by submitting a copy of the CITI completion certificate with the protocol package. Faculty advisor’s certificates must be submitted with the student/fellow researcher’s protocol. OPRS can not accept protocols without proof CITI completion.

Human Subject Regulations Decision Charts

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) has provided the Human Subjects Decision Charts that IRBs can use to assess if your project falls within their purview.  It is important that you keep in mind the IRB will make the final decision as to  if the study is human subject research , not the investigator.
