All UNLV researchers and faculty advisors are required to complete the CITI course in The Protection of Human Subjects before a research protocol can be accepted into the OPRS office for review by the IRB. The CITI certification must be renewed every 2 years from date of completion.
Researchers are categorized as follows:
- Principal Investigators (PI) role is held only by those given automatic PI status as defined in the “Principal Investigator Eligibility Policy” which includes: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Library Faculty, Research Professor, Research Associate Professor, Research Assistant Professor, and Center Directors.
- Exceptions to this policy:
- Funded: Apply to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Contact OSP at 895-1375.
- Non-funded: Complete the PI Eligibility Request Form and submit to OPRS for approval by the VP for Research and Dean of the Graduate College
- UNLV Student and Fellows cannot serve as Principal Investigator. The Faculty Advisor must serve as the PI and sign the Faculty Advisor Assurance Statement in the protocol package.
- Research Team (RT) includes other personnel having access to the research data.
The CITI Protection of Human Subjects education program consists of a Basic Course specifically prepared for researchers conducting Social/Behavioral or Biomedical research. Although your research may not be directly applicable to all required modules, these modules will provide a basic overview of human subjects research history/ethics and current research issues.
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas requires that you complete all modules appropriate for your type of research.
Researchers focused on Social and Behavioral Science (SBR) must complete the CITI Social/Behavioral Research Course Modules. If you are conducting research in connection with the Veterans Administration (VA), the VA module must also be completed.
Researchers focused on Biomedical Science (Biomed) must complete the CITI Biomedical Research Course Modules.
An accumulated CITI Course score of at least 75% or better is required to successfully complete the course. You will be required to also read the Belmont Report and the Conflict of Interest in Human Subjects Research information.
If you have any questions regarding these requirements you may contact the UNLV OPRS by phone at 702.895.2794 or by email at OPRSHumanSubjects@unlv.edu
